About 21 years ago, a new web community called Care2 was created as a means for liberal and environmental activists to come together and share information about their causes. I joined it in late 2004 and was an active member of it for nearly a decade. Over the years, I made many wonderful friends in it, some of whom I am still linked to in Facebook. I also made many enemies.

Important News From Care2

Dear Care2 Family,

We’re planning important changes in an effort to support the Care2 Community in creating a kinder, more inclusive, and sustainable world.

Care2 started 21 years ago as a tiny site focused on empowering individuals to make a difference. Today, we’ve grown to become a powerful activist platform with 53 million members and counting — including you.

For 21 years, Care2 members have connected with like-minded activists, created nearly a half million petitions, and gathered nearly a billion signatures! You’ve read thousands of articles on Healthy Living and Causes, saved large swaths of the Amazon Rainforest, helped support children in developing countries, and provided over 1 million days of safe drinking water.

We are so proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and our efforts are needed now, more than ever. In that spirit, we’ll be focusing all of our time and resources on Care2 Petitions – our community’s most powerful tool for collective impact. That means we’ll be saying goodbye to some features of the site that we’ve loved and nurtured for many years.

• Butterfly Rewards will expire on August 1, 2019. Please redeem any unused credits before then.
• Groups, Healthy Living and Causes, C2NN, eCards, and Care2 Connect will remain live until August 12, 2019 after which point they will be turned off.

We, and many of our members will miss these features dearly, but by focusing our efforts on petitions and working with nonprofit partners, we will be able to better amplify our positive impact.

But we can’t do it alone. 

At this moment in time, human rights, animal habitat, and our environment are in jeopardy. By starting petitions, joining campaigns and sharing successes, you help move the world in the right direction. Whether you’ve signed zero petitions or 10,000, you are an integral part of our movement.

We’ve won countless victories over the years with you by our side. Together, we make a difference!

They may try to spin this in a positive way, but the reality is that the features that made it so attractive to millions of users will be no more next month. They are doing this to save money, no doubt, but it will only make the site even less popular than it is now.

As I stated in Facebook:

The Care2 admin did very little to protect the community from being overrun by toxic personalities that made it difficult for people to get positive things done. Instead we had a tendency to stir up drama among ourselves. I won’t miss that……we have plenty of drama here in Facebook, of course

We can certainly learn a lot of painful lessons on how NOT to run a web community.

Care2 was supposed to be all about progressives and environmentalists coming together to support their causes. Instead, it became a constant ideological battleground once so many right-wing fanatics invaded it. They should have been banned and condemned for their disruptive attitudes.
