Remember this song?
It’s both a very personal song and one with universal appeal, a rare combination.
Anyway, one verse really stands out to me.
See, my old man’s got a problem
He lives with the bottle, that’s the way it is He says his body’s too old for working His body’s too young to look like his So mama went off and left him She wanted more from life than he could give I said, somebody’s got to take care of him I quit school, that’s what I did
That mama was SELFISH! If she had stayed to care for her husband, the daughter would have stayed in school and be more likely to have a bright future.
That’s why I think everyone, male or female, must take marriage vows seriously.
I, ___, take you, ___, for my lawful wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. I will love and honor you all the days of my life.
Of course, a man faithful to his wedding vows would also quit drinking for the sake of his wife, right?
