Honoring David Attenborough…and looking at his Youthful Successors.

I just celebrated my 55th birthday….and discovered that one of my favorite people in the world, biologist and television presenter David Attenborough, has the same birthday as me, only he is 98 years old. Not only has this incredible man lived a full life, he’s had an extraordinary career as a popularizer of biology, commenting on wildlife around the world.

The BBC paid tribute to him on his birthday just yesterday:

He does for biology what Carl Sagan used to do for astronomy.

So he was a great figure for my generation as well as that of my parents. But what about now and the future? Who can carry on after Attenborough is gone?

Well, I have two presenters who, while very different from Attenborough, are no less impressive in their dedication to their subjects. They could certainly appeal to younger people, being so young and brilliant themselves!

First is:

Casual Geographic aka Mamadou Ndiaye

He started out on TikTok and also established channels on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook. Here is one of his many interesting videos:

I chose this video to represent him because it also features the other presenter I want to tell about.

Lindsay Nikole

Yes, that’s her real name. She covers animals like Casual Geographic does but also looks at the past history of life on Earth. She is also on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

Here’s one of her videos.  Featuring Casual Geographic, to be fair.

I wonder what Sir David Attenbough would think of them and what they do. Well, I like them…..

Tribute to Nick Karean

Strictly speaking, as an Honorable Skeptic, I do not expect to have followers of my ethical philosophy. Nor am I a blind follower of anyone (because then I wouldn’t be a skeptic). No, not even Carl Sagan, though he was a idol of mine in childhood and he was one of my direct influences in the creation of my standard of ethics. But there is one person whose vision so closely mirrors my own, and even exceeds it in many ways, that I must pay tribute to him as a brother in arms against ignorance, superstition, and self-serving bigotry: Nick Karean.

His WordPress blog: https://nickkarean.com/

A newer blog of his on Medium:  https://nickkarean.medium.com/

He lives in a nation split between Buddhists, Muslims, Christians and Hindus, among other religious communities, yet he was a fundamentalist Christian early in his life, just as I was. Eventually, however, he learned to get away from that and developed critical thinking, becoming one of the strongest advocates for reason, science and objective truth I’ve ever known. So he and I have more in common than almost anyone else I know.

I invite all who know me to also join with him.

Vangelis was a Living Legend….and he Remains a Legend Forever!

I wrote about this incredible composer before:

Vangelis, the Dragon, and the Bullshit of Religious Fundamentalism Revisited

And now he has died, on May 17, 2022, at the age of 79.

Vangelis, composer of Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner soundtracks, dies aged 79

Greek composer topped US charts and won an Oscar with Chariots of Fire’s uplifting piano-led theme

Vangelis, the Greek composer and musician whose synth-driven work brought huge drama to film soundtracks including Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire, has died aged 79. His representatives said he died in hospital in France where he was being treated.

Born Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou in 1943, Vangelis won an Oscar for his 1981 Chariots of Fire soundtrack. Its uplifting piano motif became world-renowned, and reached No 1 in the US charts, as did the accompanying soundtrack album.

Mostly self-taught in music, Vangelis grew up in Athens and formed his first band in 1963, called the Forminx, playing the pop music of the time: uptempo rock’n’roll, sweeping ballads and Beatles cover versions, with Vangelis supplying organ lines.

They split in 1966, and Vangelis became a writer and producer for hire, working for other musicians and contributing scores for Greek films. Two years later, he struck out for Paris to further his career, where he formed the prog rock quartet Aphrodite’s Child with Greek expats including Demis Roussos. Their single Rain and Tears was a hit across Europe, topping the French, Belgian and Italian charts and reaching the UK Top 30.

After they split – Vangelis deeming the world of commercial pop “very boring” – he returned to scoring film and TV. Turning down an invitation to replace Rick Wakeman on keyboards in Yes, he moved to London and signed a solo deal with RCA Records: his LPs Heaven and Hell (1975) and Albedo 0.39 (1976) each reached the UK Top 40, the former also used to soundtrack Carl Sagan’s popular TV series Cosmos. The connection with Yes was finally completed later in the decade, when he teamed with the band’s Jon Anderson for the duo Jon and Vangelis, whose debut album went Top 5.

Vangelis had continued his film score work throughout the 1970s, but it was in the 1980s that this reached its commercial heights. Chariots of Fire became inextricable from Vangelis’s timeless theme, and the music became synonymous with slow-motion sporting montages. “My music does not try to evoke emotions like joy, love, or pain from the audience. It just goes with the image, because I work in the moment,” he later explained.

His score to Blade Runner is equally celebrated for its evocation of a sinister future version of Los Angeles, where robots and humans live awkwardly alongside one another, through the use of long, malevolent synth notes; saxophones and lush ambient passages enhance the film’s romantic and poignant moments. “It has turned out to be a very prophetic film – we’re living in a kind of Blade Runner world now,” he said in 2005.

Later in the decade he scored the Palme d’Or-winning Costa-Gavras political drama Missing, starring Jack Lemmon; the Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins drama The Bounty; and the Mickey Rourke-starring Francesco. He worked again with the Blade Runner director, Ridley Scott, on 1992 film 1492: Conquest of Paradise, and elsewhere during the 1990s, soundtracked Roman Polanski’s Bitter Moon and documentaries by Jacques Cousteau.

Vangelis drew on Greek instrumentation alongside the typical orchestras used in film scoring on Oliver Stone’s 2004 classical epic, Alexander.

His most recent score is for El Greco, a 2007 Greek biopic of the Renaissance painter. The Greek artist, who moved to Spain and acquired his nickname there, was much admired by Vangelis, who composed albums in 1995 and 1998 that were inspired by and named after him.

Continually celebrated for his evocative Chariots of Fire theme, Vangelis was also commissioned by sporting bodies to soundtrack major events, including the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, and the 2004 Olympics in Athens. He also wrote ballet scores and music for stage productions of Medea, The Tempest and other plays.

Solo releases remained steady alongside his commissioned work, and occasionally included collaborations with vocalists such as Paul Young.

A fascination with outer space found voice in 2016’s Rosetta, dedicated to the space probe of the same name, and Nasa appointed his 1993 piece Mythodea (which he claimed to have written in an hour) as the official music of the Mars Odyssey mission of 2001. His final album, 2021’s Juno to Jupiter, was inspired by the Nasa probe Juno and featured recordings of its launch and the workings of the probe itself in outer space.

Among those paying tribute to Vangelis was Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who hailed “a pioneer of electronic sound”.

Vangelis rarely gave interviews, but when he did they were fascinating to hear. This was one of his last.

Thinking of his loss makes me want to play this in his honor:

And this:

And I’m done.

My most beloved friend in YouTube!

I’ve been using an app called Plotagon since April of last year to make videos using characters I created to tell dramatic stories.

https://dalehusband.com/category/plotagon/

Now I have befriended a fellow Plotagon user who seems to be very much a kindred spirit to me. I first took notice of her back in October…..

and then the following month she made these videos for Thanksgiving:

I thought that last one was especially amusing, so I made my own version of a dance party:

The user’s name in YouTube is Mary Bliss peanutcat1977 and this is her YouTube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/user/dreamcicle19772006/featured

It wasn’t long before she began to have a strong influence on my own Plotagon stories. For example, the leading couple in her videos are Paul Jones and Vicky Jones (aka the Blazing Beauty).

I had already made a character for the Debbie and Carrie Show named Vicky Sims. That my Vicky had the same name as the Vicky of Mary Bliss was only a coincidence, but then I decided to give my Vicky Sims  a love partner…..and so I named him PAUL!

Then I took it a step further and made a copy of Vicky Jones to have her meet my Vicky Sims.

Her response:

This is awesome!!! 👌 thank you very much!!!

Unitarian Baha’is

Over the past 30 years, I have gone from being a member of a Unitarian Universalist church, to being a member of the Haifa based Baha’i Faith, to returning to the Unitarian Universalist church. Since 2010, it seems there has been found a way to merge the two religions and to use the internet to break the power of the “mainstream” Baha’i Faith and allow religious freedom to be a genuine concept for Baha’is to embrace among themselves.

Sarah Copus, NOT a typical teen star!

In the past, I have been harshly critical of popular music trends and their being so centered on teens and their shallow interests.

Not to mention the fact that so many young performers have no real talent and are just manufactured and marketed by record producers and labels to make money.

But then I found an incredible exception! Remember these people?
https://dalehusband.com/2016/04/17/the-most-beautiful-couple-in-all-of-texas/

Their daughter, Sarah Copus, is now 13 and has put out a solo album. In addition to singing so beautifully that her voice nearly rips my heart out (Listen to her on a 2002 song here on a YouTube video I made), she can play various instruments, though she seems to prefer the harp the most.

Why more people should join the Unitarian Universalists

First, take a look at this video:

Over 30,000 divisions?! Remember this warning from Jesus himself: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.” (Matthew 12:25) If his word is true, then the Church is useless. It has been divided against itself since at least 1054 AD, when there was a schism between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. The leaders of the two factions actually excommunicated each other!

Pentatonix

A cappella is a kind of musical performance in which no instruments are used other than human voices and other body parts. There are quite a few excellent a capella groups, but one of the most astounding, to me at least, has been one that originated right near where I live: Pentatonix! Specifically, they hail from Arlington, Texas.

This was the first video of theirs I saw:

Being a typical guy, I paid more attention at first to the beautiful girl than the others. But that would not last long, because then I saw THIS:

WOW! And then I saw this, which proved they could do just about anything:

And here is a collection of facts about them:

Here is their Facebook page:

I think I will be paying much more attention to these people over the next few years.

The most beautiful FAMILY in all of Texas!!

This blog has been a forum for a lot of negativity over the years, but not tonight. Tonight, I want to share my adoration for a couple who I consider to have the ideal marriage, and express their love for each other and the world with the most incredible music:  Pamela and Randy Copus of the new age group 2002, now including their daughter Sarah!

2002

http://www.2002music.com/

http://www.2002music.com/bio/

The award-winning, progressive new age band 2002 has placed 11 albums on the Billboard Charts and made the list of top new age artists in a Billboard Magazine “Year in Review” issue alongside Yanni, Mannheim Steamroller, Jim Brickman, George Winston and Enya. Over their 22 year career, their ever-evolving sound has encompassed a wide range of genres – from wistful ambient soundscapes all the way to light progressive rock. This daring blend of musical styles has given them an undeniable “signature sound” that sets them apart from other recording artists.

Entering the music scene in 1992, their first album Wings was a lush, ambient tapestry garnering massive sales and critical acclaim. Sound Mind Magazine lamented that the “only regret is that our grading system goes no higher than 5.” 2002’s album, Land of Forever (1998) spent 54 weeks on the Billboard new age chart and an additional 39 weeks on the Billboard catalog chart. It was also nominated for an INDIE award by the AFIM. River of Stars (2000) spent 74 weeks on the Billboard new age chart. Billboard Magazine compared it favorably to Vangelis, James Horner and Enya, remarking, “What a way to begin the new millennium!” This Moment Now (2003) won the COVR Award for Best New Age Album of the Year. Trail of Dreams (2014) won “Best Vocal Album” from Zone Music Reporter. 2002 won “Best New Age Music Artist 2014” from BT Fasmer’s The New Age Music Guide.

Founding members, multi-instrumentalists Pamela and Randy Copus met in high school in the theater department. Their musical paths diverged throughout college as both explored a wide variety of musical styles, instruments, and bands – everything from jazz to industrial rock. Coming back together after college, they ultimately left their respective bands to form the progressive new age band they dubbed “2002”. The zeros in the middle were originally an infinity sign and the “twos” on either side represented them on either side of infinity. However, since it was not the easiest name to type on a computer keyboard, or to pronounce, they became known as “Two Thousand Two.”

On their most recent albums, 2002 has been steadily increasing their use of vocals and percussion, infusing elements from pop, folk and progressive rock into their ambient/neo-classical roots. Also during that time, Sarah Copus, daughter of Pamela and Randy, has been taking on an ever-increasing role in the group. With the release of Trail of Dreams, Sarah, just 10 years old at the time, is one of the harpists and the primary lead vocalist in the band. Her soaring, angelic voice is featured prominently on Trail of Dreams, with many of the harmonies and vocal arrangements having been created by her. The synergy that Sarah brings to 2002’s signature sound has created something entirely new, by a band that believes in following the musical adventure wherever it leads, ever onward.

Adam Buckley

This is a Canadian DJ and radio personality who I have gotten to know from his YouTube videos rather than from his radio programs, which I have never heard. I happen to agree with almost everything he says, for he presents a well-balanced and enlightened view of almost everything. The only drawback is his tendency to use a lot of profanity, which has caused me to label him, “Sir Swear-a-Lot”. But if that is the worst thing about him, I will gladly overlook it, for he deals with a lot of the subjects I have covered on this blog for years.

William Aura

William Aura is a New Age musician that has been putting out great music since the 1970s. Most of his solo works, spanning from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, ranged from slow ambient to upbeat jazz. He was one of the first artists signed to Higher Octave Music and later became a staff producer for that lable.  In 1994 he formed a trio called 3rd Force which became a leader in the smooth jazz genre. A devoted Buddhist, his spiritual vision is reflected in both his music and in his social activism.

Several months ago, I made this video featuring one of his early songs:

He noticed it and commented thusly:

Thank you for the kind words. Great to hear this track again. Beautiful graphics. You have brought joy to my heart. Take good care.

Here’s another video of an even greater song, “Dreamer”. The visuals of this video are even more impressive!
Here is his Facebook account:
And here is Aura appealing for aid to people in Nepal:
Thank YOU, Aura, for your works, both of art and of charity. The world is an oyster and you are a pearl the size of a human heart.

Taylor Swift

In our twisted culture, most men and even some women seem to be obsessed with big breasts and big butts. Yet there is one young woman who comes across as absolutely stunning in her beauty and talent, yet she has neither oversized breasts or a big butt. In fact, she is quite thin, lacking curves at all. But that matters not when you see her as a whole.

http://www.taylorswift.com/photos

To all those plastic surgeons and others who give the impression that enlarging breasts can make a real difference in women’s lives, I’d like to give them a big F U! I’ve known some real unattractive women who were large chested. What matters is what is in the heart and the mind. But not the breasts or other body parts. Grow up, shallow minded pervs!
