Charles C. Ryrie was a FRAUD!

Here’s a wikipedia entry about him:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Caldwell_Ryrie

I will rewrite it here to make it more accurate, at least in my mind.

Charles Caldwell Ryrie (March 2, 1925 – February 16, 2016) was an American Bible peddler and Christian scammer. He served as professor of systematic theology and dean of doctoral studies at Dallas Theological Seminary and as president and professor at what is now Cairn University. After his retirement from Dallas Theological Seminary he also taught courses for Tyndale Theological Seminary. He is considered one of the most influential American theologians of the 20th century.[1] He was the editor of The Ryrie Study Bible by Moody Publishers, containing more than 10,000 of Ryrie’s expressions of mental gymnastics and insults to the intelligence of informed readers. First published in 1978, it has sold more than 2 million copies, all of which should be burned.[2] He was a notable proponent of classic premillennial dispensationalism, a pack of outright lies of there ever was one!

Ryrie was born to John Alexander and Elizabeth Caldwell Ryrie[3] in St. Louis, Missouri, and grew up in Alton, Illinois. His paternal grandfather, John Alexander Ryrie Sr. (1827-1904), served as a correspondent in the late 1870’s of the earliest known Plymouth Brethren meeting in the United States, which was started in Alton by Scottish settlers in 1849.[4] After graduating from high school in 1942, Charles attended The Stony Brook School on Long Island for one semester, where he became acquainted with headmaster Frank E. Gaebelein.[5]

Ryrie attended Haverford College, intending on following his father into a banking career. However, during his junior year, while meeting with Dallas Theological Seminary founder Lewis Sperry Chafer, Ryrie dedicated his life to Christian ministry (thus proving himself to be an idiot), and left Haverford to study theology at Dallas Theological Seminary. Haverford conferred his B.A. (1946) on the basis of his studies at Dallas (a tragic mistake, obviously). A year later, he earned his Th.M. (1947), and two years following that his Th.D. (1949). He went on to complete his Doctor of Philosophy (1954) at the University of Edinburgh.[6] He also earned a Litt.D. from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, now Liberty University School of Divinity. All that education and it was for absolutely NOTHING considering what he would do it with it. Is fraud really a crime in the USA or are exceptions always made because of Christian bigotry?

In 1987, Ryrie’s wife divorced him, probably because she was sick of his bullshit…..so good for her! Believing that the Bible did not allow divorced persons to remarry, he determined to live the rest of his life as a single man, despite his wife’s subsequent remarriage. Or maybe he said that later that because no other woman was willing to tolerate him.

Dr. Ryrie was the father of three children and three grandchildren. Hopefully at least some of them figured out their father or grandfather was a con artist.

Ryrie began his academic career by teaching one summer for Midwest Bible and Missionary Institute (which would eventually become a part of Calvary Bible College).[8] Ryrie joined the faculty of Westmont College in 1948 and eventually became dean of men and chairman of the Department of Biblical Studies and Philosophy. He returned to Dallas Theological Seminary in 1953 to teach systematic theology, but left for several years to serve as president of Philadelphia College of the Bible (now Cairn University), from 1958 to 1962.[5] He was also an adjunct faculty member from Fall 1991 through Fall 2001.[citation needed] Upon returning to Dallas once again, he became dean of doctoral studies until his retirement in 1983.[5] Ryrie has written 32 books which have sold more than 1.5 million copies.[9] Additionally, his study bible has sold more than 2.6 million copies.[10] Ryrie was an avid collector of quality rare Bibles and Bible manuscripts. On December 5, 2016, his collection was sold by Sothebys for 7.3 Million USD.[11] A 15th century copy of a Wycliffe’s Bible New Testament sold for $1,620,500 at auction.[12]  I can’t imagine anyone being so obsessed with a single collection of religious writings from a single culture. There is so much more in the real world for us to learn from and appreciate!

Ryrie died on February 16, 2016 in Dallas, Texas. Good riddance! By now he must be profoundly disappointed in his (lack of) afterlife.

As a Christian in my teens, I did have a Ryrie Study Bible, and it looked like this:

I no longer have it and I don’t even remember what happened to it, but if I had not lost it after my deconversion……

….I would have physically DESTROYED it as the worthless garbage it really is!

  1. So, you’re basic problem with Charles Ryrie, as I read your rant, is that he was a Christian… not only a Christian, but a Christian theologian. Your rant… for sure… but be assured your bias is showing. You don’t site one example where this man ever hurt or cheated anyone, but you verbally nailed him to a cross with your pen. Just face it… you hate everyone and everything that has to do with Jesus Christ. Your loss… probably eternally.

One thing also I noticed is the Bible you pictured is the NAS version. If this is what you read as a young person… we’ll, that’s part of the reason you hate Christianity. The KJV is the ONLY version in the English language that is truly inspired… ALL the newer versions are corrupt and actually DESIGNED to lead you down the prim rose path. Doubt me? I dare you to read “New Age Bible Versions” by Gail Riplinger, with an open mind. You won’t be the same person if you do. I guarantee it. My guess though is you WON’T read it as you want to stay angry with Christ and His people. Think about it. There’s a TRUTH out there that’s been hidden from you. Go turn the rock over.

    • I don’t have a problem with anyone being a Christian. I have a problem with con artists, whatever religion they claim to follow. Ryrie taught things about the Bible that were sheer nonsense, as anyone who actually reads that book for himself and knows enough about actual science and history would realize. Calling the Bible the infallible Word of God is an insult to God himself!

The King James Version of the Bible didn’t even exist until the 1600s. Before that, most of the churches were stuck on the Latin Vulgate. Being attached to the outer form of religious texts just because they are centuries old is irrational. Your claims are such obvious bullshit that you clearly were raised in a cult. And there is no basis for assuming I will be changed because I read some writings by some author I’ve never heard of. You clearly were not changed by reading my blog, were you?

  2. It is interesting to me that you can judge a man’s character based on nothing less than his view regarding the infallibility of the Bible. You make broad sweeping statements about Ryrie with no significant or verifiable content. Perhaps you have risen to a god like state that affords you that luxury. I think not!

    • My point is that if something is clearly not true, no amount of phony rhetoric from someone like Ryrie can ever make it true and using rhetoric alone to defend a false idea (actually, hundreds of false ideas) is the very definition of a liar or con artist. I never said anything about myself that you just did, so you lied too! You just need to grow up and face the harsh reality that your religion is false and of no real value anymore.

      • Please enumerate on your clam that Ryrie was a fraud. On what basis do you make your claim? Are you gay and making your assertions based on the differences of 1 Corinthians 6: 9-11 and Matthew 12: 31-32? A Maui psychologist has claimed the bible was written by a bunch of uneducated men who were clueless? Is thathe same basis from which your so far baseless claims were derived? My somewhat educated guess is that you took one of Ryrie’s classes and failed it miserably, thus resulting in your angry, aimless diatribe! Me thinks that thou art more confused than thou thinkest Ryrie was resulting in the pontificated bovine fecal matteyou have spewed forth from your mouth.

Do you know the definition of faith? Do you have faith in any body or anything? I truly feel sorry for you and hope you sometime find peace of mind and a softened heart. I also hope you also figure out that what the Bible doesn’t say is as important as what it does say, maybe even more so.

        • Look, Mr, Underwierd, faith CANNOT ever take the place of KNOWLEDGE and your arrogantly assuming otherwise is the source of so many of the world’s tragic problems that I have no use for your childish whining. Do not come here again!

      • What did Charles Ryrie ever do to you? Sounds like your a true atheist

. If the Bible is not the infallible word of God and Jesus is not the only way to heaven you have nothing to worry about . Always remember though you have to be 100% right, you can’t be 99.9999 % right. The Bible is God’s instruction book to mankind rather you believe it or not.

(Dale Husband: What a meaningless argument! I have never claimed to be 100% right, that’s on liars like Ryrie. I just have to be more correct than he is. And when you strip away all the fallacies and double standards employed by religious apologists [yes, including the ones you used]…….only atheism remains credible. Every God centered religion falls apart when subjected to critical analysis, not just Christianity. My blog is filled with examples of why religions are false, or at least lacking in credibility.)

  3. So what was his.fraudulant activity? Seriously, I want to know. And why are you angry with him and christianity? I am sincerely interested as I.just began reading one of his books. Where is he fraudulant? I want to be on the lookout for anything misleading.

  4. I am just completing the reading of a very compelling book titled, “I Dont Have Enough Faith to be an Athiest” by Norman Geisler. It is not only for atheists as Geisler lays out thorough intellectual arguments with evidence that support a belief in God and the Bible. It’s a fascinating book and unless you have a closed mind, Dale (which I dont suspect you do), you might get something out of it, either to beef up your viewpoints or change your mind.

    • I’ve heard of that book, and its author. He totally misrepresents the issues. Atheism does not require any faith; it is simply the rejection of theism. Theists tend to jump to the conclusion that God is responsible for anything in reality that they can’t explain. That is an anti-science attitude.

      • You can’t just hear of an author and his book and know how you would respond to it. You would be surprised at Geisler’s arguments, his intellectualism and the scientific evidence he presents. Read the book. You have strong feelings on the issue, obviously. Set the feelings aside for awhile.

  5. Been there, done that, with C. S Lewis and his book Mere Christianity, which I actually bought a copy of when I was still a Christian! But that did not stop me from deconverting in college, once I realized that Lewis’ “intellectual” arguments were actually based more on confirmation bias rather than any actual EVIDENCE. You really need to look over more of my blog entries dealing with the Bible and Christianity before you come at me again with your overconfident attitude. You don’t know as much as you think you do. Nor do apologists like Geisler.

A Parable of Deception and Damnation

As for “scientific evidence” is that a reference to Creationism? Because that is a pack of lies too, and I’ve known that since I was in college. Indeed, it was the debunking of Creationist claims by real scientists that caused me later to start questioning my faith.

  6. Dale, God loves you, even though you don’t want to believe him.

(Dale Husband: You don’t know what I want and you certainly don’t know anything about God’s love. Delusions based on religion can never be equal to facts.)

  7. I believe Charles Ryrie did not remarry because he was gay. He spent many of his post-divorce years until his death with a never-married man from Texas.

    • Wow! I never cease to be amazed at the sheer hypocrisy of those that are the most committed to religions!

      Can you give any details?

  8. I stumbled across this post looking for something totally different. I am a Christian and find some of those responding both heartfelt and wildly humorous. Per se, I have little to nothing to offer you to “change” your mind. However, my concern is the rage. Honestly, though you will protest, I suspect your anger came from some other place than religion. In some of your moderate responses you show wisdom. However, I surely would understand if Christianity through some source lit the match. I’m a shrink and I am appalled at what has been done to people, “In the name of Christ.” Sick – all of them. Lastly, please give me a margin of credit. I have walked with Christ 52 years ago and of all places, the Army. Frankly, Mr. Husband, I am too old and too much of a curmudgeon to run after rainbows and unicorns. As Paul the apostle said, if we believe in fairytales, we are the most to be pitied!

    • Thank you for your thoughtful response.

For the record, I have never hated anyone for being Christian; that’s impossible since I was myself raised as one and my own beloved mother is still one. What I hate and vent my rage at are lies and bigotry and I do that no matter the source of the lies and bigotry. Ryrie treated the Bible as a tool to brainwash people and defended it as such with no regard for objective truth whatsoever. Problem: Muslims, Baha’is, Mormons, Communists and others can have the exact same “I’m only right and everyone else is wrong” mentality and so conflicts between these factions cannot be resolved fairly.

Christians should just stop treating the Bible like it is the infallible Word of God [blasphemy] and stop treating Christianity like it has all the answers for a hurting and broken world [fraud]. We need to grow up, period.
