I no longer respect Oprah Winfrey

Not since I learned that she promotes fraud and woo on her TV talk show and her other publications. And that causes DEATH!

Ready for this week’s bit of skeptical activism? Orac has the details on Kim Tinkam, a woman who had stage 3 breast cancer and decided to treat it with The Secret (happy thoughts) and diet changes instead of science-based medicine. The science offers a 50/50 chance of survival. The happy thoughts add nothing to your not-so-promising chance of surviving 5 years without treatment.

Four years ago, Oprah featured Tinkam on her show and gave her the validation she needed to continue using quack therapy. Today, Tinkam is dying, forgotten as Oprah launches her 24/7 health network OWN.

Orac suggests we remind Oprah (or at least her producers) of the damage she’s done. Go to her contact page and show them the human cost of spreading misinformation.

Oprah doesn’t belong on television anymore, and we need to start a campaign to end her broadcasting and publishing career!

  1. Hmm… I happen to think everyone is worth respect. I haven’t thought Oprah would be especially smart or an expert to ask advice on how to deal with illness… I think she is very smart when it comes to marketing herself and interviewing people. I think that’s who and what she is, and she is very successful in her line of business. I think it is amazing for a poor black girl to do the journey Oprah has done. That alone is worth the respect. I also appreciate the fact that she has got USA to read and the work she does through Angel Network. That she is just a regular person when it comes to mysteries, fairytales and miracles doesn’t diminish my respect at all. We all have some “weak spot” and we all make mistakes. It’s just when one comes to Oprah’s greatness, her mistakes are seen by everyone.
Besides, she did tell Kim to rely on the traditional, scientific medicine, several times. It cannot be denied that she does like things like Course In Miracles, The Secret, A New World and other such things :-Z
I mean, I’m a Monotheist witch, how much more woowoo do you get? LOL

Hugs, Dale and give my love to Cheri 🙂

The Roman Catholic Church has also been extremely successful, which makes its mistakes all the more terrible. No one, and nothing, is too big to be criticized, condemned, or disrespected.

I’ve never known you to be downright stupid, Ketutar. That I find among many religious and spiritual people, but as I keep saying over and over, it is not wise or honorable to paint all of a kind of person with the same brush. We are also individuals too.
